Before applying in a college or a university there are many points that should be kept in mind.

First of all, you should research and decide what college major you want to take up. The motive behind joining a college or going for college education is to prepare you for your future career. If career is predetermined then it would much easier to find a college, as deciding on the career would would lessen the college choices. This is because every college or university offers distinct choices of courses. Moreover, you can find some colleges and universities that specialize in the field of your choice.

It totally depends on an individual that what kind college he or she wants to join. Say for instance, he or she may join faith or religion based college, gender- based college, historical black college, etc. There are even more characteristics that can be verified before joining a college. You may like to attend an urban college or a rural or even a suburban set college. There is one more option which is if you like and your pocket allows you can even go and study abroad.

If your plans are to live within the college campus or in a college hostel that you are going to join you should look for a college that provide such facilities. It is because not all colleges provide hostel facilities. The other thing should be kept in mind is that whether the hostel facility that is being provided is mixed sex hostel or a single sex one. Even find out if the bathrooms are private, shared or community bathrooms. Many colleges provide on-campus housing for freshers so you should look if the nearby apartments have the rooms available.

Look at your finances. Like the tuition and education fees is in your range. Even check if there are any kind of scholarships or grants available. If you are out of money or the education fees in beyond your reach you can even go for education loans that are easily available, and have to be paid once you get into some job after finishing your college. You can follow the old saying “Earn while you Learn”, that is just look for possibilities if you can work without disturbing your studies. If this could be done it would be the best way as the paying the loan amount would be much easier then.

The first person to guide a student about this are the parents. Parents are the best guide for their children. After parents friends could prove to be helpful. You can easily approach them, like friends who are already going to college, they can seek their help. These days internet is one's best friend. Just log on and you will have the world at the click of your figure. These days the students union that is present in different colleges have been told to help the new comers with all their problems dealing with the admissions. They act as counselors and help the newer joiners.

Once the research is complete discuss it with the person whose advise you trust the most. You should apply in at least 5 colleges or more so that if 1 or more options are closed you are not left empty handed. These steps do not ensure you to find the ideal college, however, these should be used to help you in your college search and aid you to make a better informed decision.
